After months of waiting, the Golden Globes 2025 nominations have been announced. On Monday (9th December), the latest rounds of nominees perceived the best films and TV shows of the year were named by Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut during a live broadcast from Los Angeles.
Films in contention for the awards at the forthcoming ceremony include hit musical Wicked, Sean Baker’s Palme d’or-winning Anora and Brady Corbet’s epic drama The Brutalist which was hailed a ‘masterpiece’ after its festival premiere. The latter received seven nominations.
Edward Berger’s Conclave, starring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci, has also received several nominations, as has Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, which stars nominees Timothee Chalamet and Edward Norton. However, it was Netflix’s divisive musical drama Emilia Perez that led the pack, with eight nominations.
Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, are among the stars who have scored nominations for the Golden Globes, as the Hollywood award. British actress Erivo is shortlisted for the best female actor in a comedy or musical film for her role as Elphaba, while co-star Ariana Grande is in the running for best supporting female actor for playing Glinda.
Hugh Grant, Angelina Jolie, Sebastian Stan, Demi Moore, Pamela Anderson, Selena Gomez, and Kate Winslet are among the other big names in contention at the Golden Globes 2025. With four nods to its name, Wicked also got a mention in the cinematic and box office achievement category, while both musicals are shortlisted in the best picture musical or comedy category.
Meanwhile, there was a surprise nomination for Robbie Williams for his offbeat biopic, Better Man, which is his life story told through the medium of a computer-generated monkey. It’s up for best original song.
Sing Sing, a film based on a rehabilitation programme at the Sing Sing correctional facility in Ossining New York State, saw its star, Colman Domingo nominated for best actor in a motion picture drama.
The Golden Globes have been through controversy in recent years, but remains the first major awards in the film calendar, and offers pointers for could do well at next year’s Oscars. Unlike the Oscars, the Golden Globes also have awards for TV Shows, with The Beat, Only Murders in the Building, Shogun, and Baby Reindeer the main contenders in those categories.
