Rashida Jones Reads Late Dad Quincy Jones’ Honorary Oscar Speech

Actress Rashida Jones paid a loving tribute to her renowned music producer dada Quincy Jones as she accepted a Governor Award on his behalf two weeks after his demise. Rashida, 48, and three of her siblings- Martina, 58, Quincy III, 55, and Kenya, 31- took the stage at the Governors Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Jones, who died on 3 November aged 91, was one of five Hollywood luminaries due to be honored at the 15th Governors awards. The actor and director recounted her father’s words: “I was always keenly aware of the enormous power that we possessed as film-makers, that the art we created, the stories we told, if we were lucky, had a chance to move people in ways that they could never imagine, to make society and the world a more understanding and embracing place for us all to exist.”

She spoke about how her father was loved by many and had friends in every room he went int. The actor said the family felt that he was very much present on the night. “I want you to know that he is here, very much here,’ she said, before reading part of his acceptance speech.

Before leaving the stage, she invited the crowd to listen to some of his music on the way home and to remember the man who made such a huge impact on the industry. “He loved life, and he often said, “Live every day like it’s your last, and one day you’ll be right.: And you did, Dad. You did. You lived the biggest, best, most beautiful life of love every single day you were here,” She said.

This year’s other honorees, voted on by the Academy’s board of governors and announced in June, were casting director Juliet Taylor; filmmaker and Philanthropist Richard Curtis (the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award); and producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, best known for the James Bond franchise (the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award).

Quins Jones’ award was presented ‘for his artistic genius, relentless creativity and trailblazing legacy in film music.’ Taylor was cited ‘for her expansive body of work and inedible influence on the field of film casting.’

Curtis was honored “for his extraordinary charitable work that has transformed lives around the world.” Wilson and Broccoli were honored “for their consistently high quality, high impact motion picture production.”

The event was produced by Jennifer Fox for the sixth year in a row. Rickey Minor was music director.
