Beyonce made history with Cowboy Carter, winning her first Album of the Year Award and becoming the first Black woman to claim the Best Country Album title. On the other hand, the new owner of a house in Brentwood and originally from Compton, rapper Kendrick Lamar’s Not Like Us excelled in all five categories in which it was nominated., cementing his dominance in the rap scene.

The track, which ignited conversations across the industry upon its release, claimed both ‘Record of the Year’ and ‘Song of the Year,’ marking a historic moment for hip-hop at the prestigious ceremony. This unprecedented success underscores Lamar’s influence on the genre and the evolving landscape of rap music.

Aside from these remarkable wins, ‘Not Like Us’ further cemented its legacy by taking home three additional categories: Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, and Best Music Video- bringing Lamar’s total haul for the night to five awards. The clean sweep shattered records, making ‘Not Like Us’ the most-awarded rap song in Grammy history.

The night was full of unforgettable performances from such artists as Chappell Roan, Benson Boone, who did a backflip off his piano onstage, Doechii, and Cynthia Enviro and Herbie Hancock performing a musical tribute to the late Quincy Jones.

The Grammy Awards winners are determined by the Recording Academy’s Voting Members- artists, producers, songwriters and engineers- making sure the awards remain a peer-recognized honor in the industry.

This year, there were a couple of several key updates implemented by the Recording Academy to its awards process, including changes to eligibility criteria and category remains. These adjustments, in effect for the 2025 GRAMMY’s, showcase the Academy’s sheer commitment to inclusivity and evolving industry standards.

Best new artist’s nominees haven’t always received the best exposure on the Grammys. In most instances, they’ve been sidelined or squeezed into medleys and snippets. However, this year was different with Sabrina Carpenter and Chappel Roan each getting big song-and-dance numbers, and the other competitors held forth in a long, elaborate segment that at once didn’t claim their songs together.
