On Monday, the cast and crew of Oscar-nominated films such as “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” convened at the yearly nominee’s luncheon. During this festive gathering, actors, directors, and various behind-the-scenes artists interacted and gathered for a collective photo. It’s a chance for those up for an award to mingle with fellow nominees and Academy leadership, including president Janet Yang. This year, the 96th annual event had the added excitement of an unexpected canine star stealing the show.

The star of best picture nominee Anatomy of a Fall was a dog named Messi, who played Sandra Huller’s husband in the French courtroom drama directed by Justine Triet. The lovable pup was a hit with attendees, including Ryan Gosling, nominated for playing Ken in the new Barbie movie, and best actress contender Emma Stone, who were both sitting at the same table.

Ryan Gosling triggered flashbulbs and iPhone cameras by standing up at his table, prompting people to swarm around him as they told him how much they loved the film. He smiled as he chatted with those seated nearby, including Society of the Snow director J.A. Bayona, Greta Gerwig, and Margot Robbie. They all talked about how they felt robbed of a best director nod and how the film had been received.

Other tables were busy with Oscar hopefuls, as well. Robert Downey Jr. was seated next to “Poor Things” star Stone and Maestro producer Bradley Cooper. At the same time, Cillian Murphy, who was nominated for his performance in the atomic bomb drama Oppenheimer, and Emily Blunt, who was nominated for her work in the historical drama The Shape of Water, swapped stories with each other and others. Directors Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese were also spotted, as was American Symphony composer Laura Karpman.

The event’s highlight is always the class photo, which feels like a high school graduation and allows nominees to rub elbows with their peers while looking at the trophy-filled backdrop. This year’s event began an hour earlier, and attendees were served a vegetarian menu that included king oyster mushroom salad and wild mushroom risotto. The photo was taken at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, with each table grouped by film genre. The photos will be distributed to the media after the ceremony. For more photos, check out our gallery.
