Clooney Gets Tony Award Nomination for Broadway Debut

The 2025 Tony Award nominations have been made public, with several recognizable film and TV actors earning nods for theirexhilarating performances on the stage. ‘Buena Visat Social Club,’ ‘Death Becomes Her’ and ‘Maybe Happy Ending’ are the productions that garnered the most nods with 10 each.

These were closely followed by ‘Dead Outlaw,’ “John Proctor is the Villain,” ‘Sunset Blvd’ and ‘The Hills of California’ with seven each. George Clooney earned his first-ever Tony nomination in the lead actor in a play category for his performance in ‘Good Night, and Good Luck,’ a story that follows Edward R. Murrow’s historic on-air interview with Sen. Joseph McCarthy.

Clooney will go against Daniel Dae Kim, who was nominated for his role in ‘Yelow Face,’ as well as Cole Escola (‘Oh, Mary!’). Harry Lennix (‘Purpose’), Jon Michael Hill (‘Purpose’) and Louis McCartney (‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’).

“It’s a thrill to have five nominations for this play,” Clooney said of the play, which he also co-wrote. “For everyone involved, this has been an incredible experience. I couldn’t be more proud or feel more lucky.”

The Tonys reward excellence in Broadway theatre over the past year. And there were several big names passed over in this year’s nomination round. Neither Denzel Washington nor Jaek Gyllenhaal garnered nods for their roles in ‘Othello.’

Robert Downey Jr. was also left off the list for his role in ‘McNeal,’ and neither Kieran Culkin nor Bill Burre were recognized for their Broadway revival of ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ though Bob Odenkirk did score a coveted nomination for his role in Shelley Levene.

Also left out off the list is Tony-winning actress Idina Menzel for her role in ‘Redwood,’ and Nick Jonas and Adrienne Warren were passed over for their performances in ‘The Last Five Years.’

Elsewhere, Audra McDonald received her 11th Tony nomination, for here role in Gypsy, making here the most nominated performer in history. Rosemary’s Baby actress Mia Farrow is another famous screen star up for her first Tony Award, for her part in The Roommate.

This year, the Tonys will be hosted by Cynthia Erivo and will air on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on Sunday, June 8, 2025 at 8 p.m. ET. Last year, ‘The Outsiders’ and ‘Stereophonic’ took home the show’s top honors, while Jeremy Strong, Maleah Joi Moon, Jonathan Groff and Sarah Paulson took home top acting honors.
